1819-Lousiana
As far as we know, John Atkins' father was a slave merchant from Ireland. The story that has been passed down through the family, is that his father brought slaves from the Caribbeans to America; John's mother was one of these slave women. We are told that he was to deliver her (John's mother) to Lousiana. During his voyage, he fell in love with her and to this union John was born. Becuase of the time in American history they nevered married.
John was born into slavery, however, some family members remember a similar story, but was told that John was never a slave, but worked in his owners house. Others family members remember family story that state he was a slave, but some of his children were born into slavery (those born before 1865) and others were not (those born after 1865).
At the time of John's birth born in 1819 there were plenty of historical events happening in America. He was born seven years after the war of 1812, four years after Nepolean surrenders at Waterloo, and five years before Mexico outlaws slavery.
